When I was hiking Hobble Creek to Diamond Fork Canyon, I took a little detour on the Wardsworth trail. I found that this can be a great trail for mountain biking — if you don’t get stuck following a trail of fresh horse poop.
There was a fork in the road, and I chose the trail on the right, which continued to follow the creek. If you take a left, you’re suppose to be able to make a loop of the trail. I think that would have been the smarter path to take, but both trails are bikeable.
The Wardsworth trail takes you alongside the Wardsworth creek. Don’t be shy about crossing it, you’ll have to cross is about 20 times, and if you’re on a bike, you’re going to get your feet wet, so there’s no point in avoiding it.
When I got to the trailhead, there was a horse trailer parked there as well, and the entire way up I had to avoid horse poop. I almost got to the end, but when I saw the horses coming back down, I decided to turn around before I received a double dose of fresh horse poop.
Pros
- Not too steep
- A great trail for downhill biking
- Scenic — the trail parallels a river
- There’s a cool beaver damn
Cons
- Don’t bike this if you see a horse trailer at the trailhead
- You have to cross the river a bunch of times
- There were some parts that seemed like they might be difficult to pass when there is a lot of spring runoff coming down the mountain
